Shadows and Silver Screens: A Night with “Cry of the City” at the Cinema Museum

by Riley Ramone March 12, 2025 No Comments

Tonight, I stepped back in time. Not just to the gritty streets of 1940s New York, but to the very heart of cinema’s golden age, all within the walls of London’s enchanting Cinema Museum. If you’re a film noir fan, or simply someone seeking a truly unique cinematic experience, this post is for you…

“Cry of the City,” a 1948 masterpiece, was the star of the evening. This gripping tale of a cop and a criminal, locked in a deadly game of cat and mouse, felt incredibly authentic. The film’s on-location shooting in New York provided a fascinating time capsule of a city on the cusp of change. Every grimy alleyway and every bustling street corner felt alive. Capture, evasion, danger and death, were delivered with a raw intensity that only classic noir can provide.

But what made this screening truly special was the format: 16mm. The grainy texture and stark contrasts offered a visceral experience that a digital version simply cannot replicate. We even had the chance to compare a short digital clip from the film with the 16mm, and the difference was astonishing. The depth and richness of the original format were undeniable, a testament to the enduring power of celluloid.

And the evening began with a delightful surprise: a classic Fred Quimby cartoon! The madcap antics of a cat and mouse (pre-Tom & Jerry, which Quimby is best known for), had the audience roaring with laughter. It was a nostalgic appetiser, and perfect foreshadowing of the cat/mouse dynamic of our heroes in the dark drama that followed.

The true magic, however, lies in the Cinema Museum itself. Housed in a former Victorian workhouse, where Charlie Chaplin once spent part of his childhood, it’s a treasure trove of cinematic history. Every corner is filled with vintage posters, antique projectors, and fascinating memorabilia. It’s a living, breathing testament to the power of film. Stepping inside is like walking onto a film set, where every artefact tells a story.

This screening was part of Kennington Noir, a monthly event that brings the best of film noir to this unique venue. Every week, a different classic is showcased, offering a curated experience for cinephiles. It’s a must for anyone who loves the genre, or simply appreciates the art of storytelling on the big screen.
